Life term for hit-and-run killer
(about 1 hour later) | |
A woman who killed a mother-of-three in Renfrewshire by knocking her down and repeatedly driving over her body has been jailed for life.
Rona Mackenzie, 45, from Paisley, was convicted last month of murdering 39-year-old Margaret Borris in the town's King Street in July 2008.
Sentencing Mackenzie at the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Lady Dorian said it was a deliberate and horrific offence. | Sentencing Mackenzie at the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Lady Dorian said it was a deliberate and horrific offence. |
She ordered Mackenzie to serve a minimum of 15 years in prison.
Lady Dorrian told her: "A social inquiry report suggests you have expressed remorse for what happened.
"If that is so it is in sharp distinction to your actions on that day and your attitude thereafter as disclosed in a phone conversation with your son which displayed a callous rather a remorseful attitude."
Lady Dorrian said MacKenzie's attempt to get rid of the car used in the killing was also a serious offence, and jailed her for five years to be served concurrently to the life sentence.
The court had heard how trouble between the two women, who both had children by 50-year-old James Wandrum, was sparked when his dog was injured while Mrs Borris was walking it.
Alerted police | |
Mackenzie made a chance sighting of Ms Borris, who was walking with her son, 20-year-old Paul Wandrum, in Paisley's King Street on 7 July.
The court was told that MacKenzie lost her temper and drove at Ms Borris, causing her to fall, before repeatedly driving over her body.
Her victim suffered fatal crushing damage and sustained a total of 73 separate injuries.
Mackenzie drove off after the attack and dumped the Volkswagen Polo car in a reservoir.
It was later spotted by an angler who alerted police.
The court heard how Mackenzie, formerly of Garry Drive, Paisley, had boasted of the attack hours later to her boyfriend, Robert Mullen.
Following her arrest, she continued to deny murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice, but a jury convicted her of both offences.
Ms Borris left three children, aged 20, 12 and three. They are now being cared for by family members. |
