A coffee shop has been sealed off for nearly four hours after reports of a stand-off involving a man holding a young child. A man has been arrested following a stand-off at a coffee shop in Nottingham city centre.
Police were called to the Costa shop off Friar Lane, in Nottingham city centre, at about 12:20 GMT. Police were called to the Costa shop off Friar Lane at about 12:20 GMT, with eyewitnesses reporting an argument involving a man holding a young child.
Eyewitnesses have reported seeing the man talking to officers inside. A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said a 26-year-old man was spoken to by police negotiators and arrested on suspicion of assault at about 17:15.
Police said there was no risk to the wider public, adding that officers were doing everything they could to bring the matter to a peaceful conclusion. He said the unharmed two-year-old was taken to hospital as a precaution.
No-one has been injured, Nottinghamshire Police said. A number of nearby roads that were closed as part of a police cordon have since reopened.
The police cordon outside the coffee shop has been causing public transport disruption after it was widened to include Friar Lane, leading to Market Square being shut. The BBC's Neil Heath said a huge crowd formed outside the cordon during the dispute.
