Talks to resume Europe gas flow 'No progress' in Europe gas talks

Russian gas company Gazprom says it has held talks with its Ukrainian counterpart to try to end the row which has disrupted gas supplies in Europe. Talks between EU and Russian and Ukrainian officials to try to end the row disrupting gas supplies in Europe have ended with no apparent progress.
The dispute - over prices and new contracts - has led to a suspension of supplies of Russian gas via Ukraine to several European countries. Further planned talks in Brussels were reportedly cancelled, and there is no sign of direct Russia-Ukraine talks.
There are no details of the overnight talks between the two chief executives. Hopes were raised after a meeting between the heads of the two countries' gas companies in Moscow overnight.
They are due in Brussels as the European Union seeks to broker an end to the row. The row - over prices and new contracts - has led to a suspension of supplies of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine.
The meeting between Alexei Miller, chief of Russian gas monopoly Gazprom, and Ukrainian state gas company head Oleh Dubyna is the first sign of possible progress in ending this bitter dispute, the BBC's James Rodgers reports from Moscow, where the meeting took place. The European Union has been seeking to broker an end to the dispute.
A Gazprom spokesman said only that the two met to try to find a way to deal with what he called the current "critical" situation. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso met Russian gas giant Gazprom's chief executive Alexei Miller, and later the Ukrainian Naftogaz company's head Oleg Dubyna.
But the BBC's Dominic Hughes in Brussels says any optimism resulting from the Moscow meeting may have been misplaced - further meetings expected later in the day appear to have been cancelled.

Italy said it had received only 10% of its expected supply. Countries in eastern and central Europe have been particularly badly affected, as they rely heavily on Russian gas supplies but don't have access to the same kind of stockpiles found in Germany, Italy and France.
