There were reports of fierce fighting in northern Gaza on Monday as news began to emerge of the scale of the problems facing medical staff in the territory. Five Israelis have been killed.
Dr Khamis al-Essi, an emergency doctor at Gaza's biggest hospital, al-Shifa, said they were struggling to cope with the huge numbers of casualties. class="" href="/1/hi/world/middle_east/7811189.stm">Map: Gaza incursion - Week Two class="" href="/1/hi/world/middle_east/7810888.stm">Analysis: Israeli pride at a cost class="" href="/1/hi/in_pictures/7812189.stm">In pictures: Gaza offensive class="" href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/arabic/news/">BBC News in Arabic 'Mainly civilians'
He said they had received "all sorts of casualties, from shattered bodies, beheaded individuals and patients with superficial cuts and lacerations". There were reports of fierce fighting in northern Gaza as news began to emerge of the scale of the problems facing medical staff in the territory.
"Most of the injuries affected civilians, especially women and children," he told the BBC. class="" href="/1/hi/world/middle_east/7811189.stm">Map: Gaza incursion - Week Two class="" href="/1/hi/world/middle_east/7810888.stm">Analysis: Israeli pride at a cost class="" href="/1/hi/in_pictures/7812189.stm">In pictures: Gaza offensive class="" href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/arabic/news/">BBC News in Arabic
The BBC's Rushdi Abou Alouf, reporting from inside the hospital, said he had seen as many as 900 people being treated. Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert, one of two foreign doctors working at Gaza's biggest hospital, al-Shifa, said they had received a "new wave" of very serious injuries on Monday.
The doctors say they are running out of medicine, and there is a severe shortage of all essential medical and blood supplies across Gaza, he says. "We have many amputations, head injuries, and of course for a hospital in this situation... it's extremely difficult to handle," he told the BBC.
Among the dead was a family of seven killed by an Israeli air strike in a refugee camp east of Gaza City, health officials said. He warned that the hospital would be unable to operate much longer unless it received fresh medical supplies.
Dr Essi said many families were in need of ambulances, but medical workers were struggling to reach casualties because they were being shot at. "People are dying now because of lack of supplies. We have all operating rooms full. Yesterday we were operating on two patients in one operating room... This is a complete disaster".

Another BBC journalist in Gaza, Hamada Abu Qammar, said residents on the edges of the city were heading into the city centre seeking safe places away from the fighting. "Among all the hundreds we have seen so far, we have seen two fighters," he said.
