Crash driver killed on rail line
(about 2 hours later) | |
A 30-year-old woman was killed when her car ended up in the path of a train at a level crossing in Lincolnshire after it was in collision with a van.
Police said the van driver managed to steer his vehicle off the tracks before the barriers came down, but the woman, from Spalding, became penned in.
The accident happened in icy conditions at West Road, South Drove, near Spalding, just before 0900 GMT.
Police said the woman made "frantic" efforts to get off the line but failed.
'Skating rink' | |
No-one on the train was hurt, but the driver and some passengers have been treated for shock.
The train was the 0833 Peterborough to Lincoln service.
The woman's grey Rover 216 clipped the Transit van, which was travelling in the opposite direction, police said.
Officers said the two men in the van, who managed to get their vehicle off the line, tried to help the woman but were not able to reach her car before the train arrived.
Parts of the woman's car, which broke in two, were pushed a quarter of a mile (0.42km) down the track, eyewitnesses said.
Speaking at the scene, Sgt Dave Kay said: "She was making frantic attempts to get off the level crossing but witnesses said it was very, very quick from when the barriers came down to the collision.
"She was trying to get her car off the level crossing but because of the arctic conditions it was like a skating rink and she couldn't get very far."
Services on the line are running about 30 minutes late and terminating at Sleaford.
