A D.C. police officer was struck in his protective vest Sunday during a confrontation with an armed man in a house in Northeast Washington, authorities said.
The 7th District officer was “struck by a bullet,” and the vest “probably saved his life,” D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said. Calling the officer a hero, he said he was likely to be discharged Sunday night from a hospital.
Typically, a gunshot leaves bruises even with a vest.
The incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. in the 100 block of 36th Street NE, where police went with a search warrant for a gun, the chief said.
He said the search for guns goes on “even during the holidays.” A gun was later found, Newsham said.
Arriving officers “got into a confrontation” with an armed man and fired, the chief said.
He said the man was hit at least once, suffering a wound that was apparently not life-threatening.
Preliminary indications were that the man had also fired, but that was not confirmed, Newsham said. “We have to look at all the forensics,” he said.
A police SWAT team was summoned before the man surrendered, the chief said.
