Officer hit by bullet in vest during confrontion in NE, D.C. police say
(about 1 hour later) | |
A D.C. police officer was struck in his protective vest Sunday during a confrontation with an armed man in a house in Northeast Washington, the police said.
The seventh district officer was “struck by a bullet,” and the vest “probably saved his life,” D.C. police chief Peter Newsham said. He called the officer a hero and said officials expected he would be discharged Sunday night from a hospital.
Typically, a gunshot leaves bruises even if it strikes a protective vest.
The confrontation occurred about 4:30 p.m. the 100 block of 36th Street NE, where police went to serve a search warrant for a gun, the chief said. A gun was later found at the scene, Newsham said.
When police arrived about 4:30 p.m., Newsham said they “got into a confrontation” with an armed man, and they fired, the chief said.
He said the man was hit at least once, and suffered a wound that was apparently not life-threatening, Newsham said. The man was arrested, Newsham said. His name was not available immediately.
Preliminary indications were that the man had also fired during the confrontation, but Newsham said police had not confirmed that.
A police SWAT team surrounded the house after the confrontation, but it ended relatively quickly, police said.
