And just as the album charts at this time of year are filled with "best of" collections, so the Magazine wishes to trumpet some of its highlights from the past 12 months.

The result: a downloadable, and handily print-off-able, Best of the Magazine 2006 - 26 pages of articles originally published during the past 12 months on bbc.co.uk/magazine.

These days, the pop world tends to employ some rather forced creativity in trying to re-brand the perennial "greatest hits" format - stand up Paul Weller (with Hit Parade), Take That (with Never Forget) and Oasis (with Stop the Clocks).

The Magazine, however, sees no reason to package up its highlights with a cleverer-than-thou, punning title - although readers' suggestions are always welcome.
