Ten fire engines were called out to a blaze in an 11th floor flat at a 15-storey tower block in Kent.

A man, aged in his early 50s, was taken to hospital suffering from minor burns and the effects of breathing in smoke.

The fire broke out at Staner Court in Ramsgate just after midday on Saturday. The trapped man was saved by fire crews wearing breathing apparatus.

A chip pan is thought to have caught fire and firefighters warned of the dangers deep-fat cooking poses.

The kitchen was completely destroyed and the rest of the flat was severely damaged by heat and smoke, Kent Fire and Rescue Service said.

Watch manager David Hudson said: "This incident demonstrates the dangers of using chip pans.

"The effects of a chip pan fire can be devastating, as has been shown here."

A major fire in July 2001 at the same flats saw one person die and 10 others taken to hospital.
