Police closed part of the M74 at Lockerbie after a man's body was found at the side of the road. Part of the A74(M) motorway was closed in Dumfries and Galloway after the body of an elderly man was found at the side of the road.
An investigation is under way and the northbound carriageway remained closed until about 2340 GMT on Tuesday. Police received numerous reports of a man lying on the northbound carriageway at Muirhead Overbridge, near Lockerbie, at about 1640 on Tuesday.
Traffic was diverted north along the B7076 from Junction 18 (Lockerbie south) and returning to the motorway at Junction 17. The man, who is thought to be from the Lockerbie area, had been struck by several vehicles.
A report on the incident in Dumfries and Galloway is expected to be sent to the local procurator fiscal's office. The northbound carriageway remained closed until about 2340 GMT.
Police launched an investigation and appealed for witnesses.
