The incident took place at a Mace store just above Finaghy Crossroads on the Lisburn Road at about 1630 GMT. The gang targeted a Mace shop and off-sales on the Lisburn Road at about 1630 GMT on Monday.
Eyewitnesses said that further up the road a car was rammed by a police vehicle. Police said a planned operation was carried out as the robbers struck. A car was rammed and the driver ordered to the ground.
An eyewitness said police handcuffed a man they took from the car. Police said four men were arrested in connection with an attempted armed robbery. It is understood a knife was recovered during the police operation. Four men are being questioned about the raid.
An eyewitness said armed police officers surrounded the car and the driver was put on the ground and handcuffed.
