Ian Hislop, 40, from the city's Gorbals area, attacked Alan Thornton, 29, at a tower block in Shawlands on 17 March. At the High Court in Glasgow, Hislop was convicted of murder, attempted murder, attempting to defeat the ends of justice and breaking a bail curfew. He was ordered to serve at least 15 years in prison before he can apply for parole. The court heard how the offences took place after a disturbance at Tantallon Towers, Dirleton Drive, in Glasgow's south side. 'Savagely stabbed' Mr Thornton was stabbed after intervening when Hislop had earlier tried to kill 42-year-old George Brown. Hislop had previously served 14 jail terms for offences such as assault and robbery. He had also been put on probation after being convicted of carrying a knife in 2005, but later breached the order. He had been on bail at the time of the murder having been charged with attempted housebreaking. Judge Lord Bracadale told Hislop: "When you came to the scene, you savagely stabbed George Brown and, when Alan Thornton intervened, a man you had no quarrel with, you stabbed him in the heart and murdered him." |
