Anyone with any information in connection with the incident is asked to contact Merthyr Tydfil police station or anonymously through CrimeStoppers on 0800 555111 Supt Paul Kemp, from South Wales Police, said: "Although the deceased has not yet been formally identified, at this stage we believe he is the occupant of this property and his family is being supported by a specially-trained family liaison officer.
"A forensic examination of the bungalow is underway and a Home Office pathologist will carry out a post mortem examination later today to try to establish the exact cause of death.
"I would like to reassure the community that a full investigation is underway and a man, who we believe he is known to the deceased, is in custody."
Supt Kent said he was particularly keen to hear from anyone who might have witnessed or overheard an altercation in the vicinity of the bungalow in Greenwood Close, sometime between 0900 and 23.00 GMT on 20 December.
