UK govt to table 3rd motion on Monday calling for general election – reports UK PM Johnson says he wants early election on December 12
(32 minutes later)
Westminster is rife with rumors that the British government plans to table a fresh motion calling for a general election this Monday, according to multiple reports. The British Prime Minister will push for an election for a third time in the coming days, telling reporters on Thursday that parliament must agree to an election in mid-December.
Boris Johnson has previously attempted to call an election on two occasions, but failed to get the motion passed each time. The prime minister will need to win the backing of two-thirds of MPs to get the motion through Parliament.
Opposition parties have so far refused to agree to an election until the government can remove the threat of a no-deal Brexit. Sky News’ political editor Beth Rigby says she spoke with chief whip Mark Spencer, who admitted it was highly likely the government would table a motion for a general election come October 28. The prime minister will need to win the backing of two-thirds of MPs to get the motion through Parliament. He said that if MPs agree to an election on December 12, then Parliament will be dissolved on November 6.
Opposition parties have so far refused to agree to an election until the government can remove the threat of a no-deal Brexit.
“The way to get Brexit done is to, I think, be reasonable with Parliament,” Johnson said. “If they genuinely want more time to study this excellent deal, they can have it but they have to agree to a general election on December 12 – that’s the way forward.”
Johnson also said Parliament would have enough time to study the Brexit Bill before dissolving for an election, adding that it would be morally incredible for Labour to refuse an election at this point.
The government has floundered in its efforts to get a Brexit deal through Parliament. It’s latest efforts were dealt a serious blow last weekend when MPs voted to delay deciding on the newest deal.
The Speaker of the House then refused to grant a “meaningful vote” on the bill on Monday, saying that allowing it to proceed would essentially amount to debating the same matter twice.
The prime minister has said it’s likely the EU will offer a new Brexit delay up to the end of January 2020, but that it could offer a shorter one of November 15 or 30.
