An arson attack at a house in Londonderry's Waterside area could have been lethal, the fire service has said.

Firefighters were called to Hollymount Park beside Gobnascale estate at 0520 GMT, after an oil tank caught fire and damaged an unoccupied house.

The fire then spread next door. No-one was injured during the incident.

Kevin Lynch, from Crescent Link fire station, said that oil tank fires were particularly dangerous as they could spread quickly.

"While somebody may think it's good fun to set fire to a tank and that there's nothing they can burn, oil can move and can affect property that's quite some distance away.

"This can put lives at risk and I would really discourage it," Mr Lynch said.

Police have appealed for anyone with any information about the incident to contact them.
