The victim, who has not been formally identified by police, is believed to be in his 60s. A post-mortem examination is due to take place later. They found the body of Patrick McGhee, 63, whose head had been severed. A post-mortem examination was taking place on Tuesday.
A man, also from the Crumpsall area, has been arrested and is being questioned by detectives. A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Det Ch Insp Howard Millington, leading this investigation, said: "This is the shocking murder of a man and our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time.
"We know people must be stunned by what has happened, and the very distressing details that have come out about Patrick's death.
"We want to reassure people that we are working hard to find out exactly what happened to him."
Detectives are continuing to question the man being held on suspicion of Mr McGhee's murder.
