Fog cancels flights from airport

Passengers for Newquay have been taken there by coach, with passengers for other destinations staying the night at the airport. Services from Heathrow, Gatwick and Liverpool have also been disrupted. Earlier, ferry services to Wales were hit with 160 passengers stranded for 10 hours on a ferry to Pembroke Dock. British Airways and other airlines cancelled hundreds of flights to and from Heathrow on Wednesday. BA has said it will cancel all UK domestic services from London Heathrow on Thursday because of continuing fog. At Cardiff, one flight early on Thursday to Amsterdam has already been cancelled and the airport advised passengers to phone ahead before leaving home. Fog has also caused reduced visibility along the M4 corridor in south Wales. The fog caused difficulties at Pembroke Dock earlier when Irish Ferries' Isle of Inishmore could not dock at 0130 GMT. The ferry had to drop anchor off the coast for a number of hours and eventually docked just before 1130 GMT. The BBC Weather Centre says the poor conditions are set to continue for the next few days when many people will be travelling for the festive break. It warned that the weather was likely to cause problems for motorists right up to Christmas. |
