Police looking for a man who vanished while swimming in Shadwell Basin in east London have recovered a body. Two bodies have been found during police searches for swimmers who went missing in separate incidents on the Thames.
The man, 23, was with friends at the site in Garnet Street shortly after 6pm on Tuesday and was seen entering the water, but did not resurface. Scotland Yard said the body of a man was pulled from the river Thames at around 4.30pm on Wednesday in Kingston, south-west London. A 47-year-old reportedly entered the water and began swimming on Tuesday evening.
A body, believed to be the same man’s, was recovered at 9.45am on Wednesday after searches by the Metropolitan police marine unit. His family was informed. Police divers continued to search for two other men who were also missing after swimming in the Thames on Tuesday evening. In July 2016 a 29-year-old man drowned in Shadwell Basin after jumping into the water with 100 other people. A bystander said children were continuing to swim in Shadwell Basin despite a police presence.
There were reports of a person in difficulty in the water near Waterloo Bridge at about 8.30pm, while another search was taking place in Kingston, south-west London, where a second man was seen in the river. A search was continuing on Wednesday night for another man believed to be missing in the Thames near Waterloo.
Outside the capital, a man is believed to have drowned in a lake at the Cotswold Water Park, near Cirencester in Gloucestershire. In a another incident on Tuesday evening, Gloucestershire constabulary recovered a body as they searched for a man in his 20s from Wiltshire who had gone missing in a lake at Cotswold Water Park.
