A thick carpet of duckweed makes it impossible to see beneath the surface so the crew have to poke about for the bike using boat hooks and a grappling iron. He says hire companies should do more to encourage users not to leave bikes near water. It would also help if the bikes had to be chained to something when parked. “If you leave a bike on the towpath, the chances are that someone is going to throw it into the water.
