A 24-year-old man died in a separate accident in County Donegal on Thursday night. The weather has caused treacherous driving conditions and accidents across the north west.
The collision between a lorry and a car happened at about 2300 GMT on the N15 between Donegal town and Ballybofey. The Ballyarnett Road has been closed between Derry and Muff after three cars left the road. A crane is on its way to lift the cars from a ditch.
A woman was hurt and has been taken to hospital, but the extent of her injuries is not known.
On the Waterside, conditions at Lisneal College are described as extremely treacherous.
Dorothy Farrell, a teacher at the school, said she was involved in a collision.
"The black ice was just unbelievable, and I hadn't gone very far when a lady slid into me.
"The ones walking slipped and slid the whole way to school.
"Buses ended up going across the road.
"There's a risk to life and limb here," she said.
Drivers have been warned to take extra care when driving, especially on minor road which may not have been treated.
