Iran first announced it would speed up production of enriched uranium on May 8, the first anniversary of the US’ unilateral withdrawal from the pact. Despite international outcry last year, Washington stuck to its hardline course and later imposed even more sanctions on Iran.
The White House also demanded that all countries halt purchases of Iranian oil or face sanctions of their own, a step Tehran blasted as “economic war.” Earlier this week, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that starting July 7, the country intends to enrich uranium at the level it considers necessary.
