McCulloch handed three-match ban Boss Jewell to punish McCulloch
(2 days later)
Wigan midfielder Lee McCulloch has been handed an immediate three-match ban by the Football Association after admitting a charge of violent conduct. Wigan boss Paul Jewell is set to fine Lee McCulloch after the midfielder was found guilty of punching Sheffield United's Chris Morgan.
Television cameras caught McCulloch punching Sheffield United captain Chris Morgan during Wigan's 1-0 home defeat on Saturday at the JJB Stadium. McCulloch, who has been banned for three matches for his actions, struck Morgan in the closing stages of the Latics' 1-0 defeat on Saturday.
Referee Peter Walton missed the punch, which came towards the end of the game. "Lee fully deserved to be charged. There was no escape," said Jewell.
McCulloch, who has apologised to Morgan, will now miss the games against Chelsea, Manchester United and Watford. "It was a silly thing to do, and although it was out of character, we'll be taking internal action against him."
Morgan, who suffered a black eye following the punch, has already said he is willing to forgive McCulloch. The Scotland international will miss Saturday's game with Chelsea at the JJB Stadium, the Boxing Day match at Manchester United and the 30 December clash at Watford.
"Lee was man enough to come and knock on the door, put his arm round me and apologise," said the United skipper. Meanwhile, Jewell was critical of the Football Asssociation for the lack of action taken against Juan Pablo Angel after the Aston Villa striker appeared to elbow Morgan, in a match a few days earlier.
"That's enough for me. That's it. It's finished. Let's get on with it. I can show you plenty of examples where players at top clubs have done things wrong Wigan boss Paul Jewell
"We're all sportsmen. We're going to get knocks and black eyes. It is part and parcel of the game." "It's the inconsistency of the law that drives me up the wall," added Jewell.
"Everyone could see Angel elbow Morgan, yet nothing happened as the referee saw it. What a load of nonsense that is.
"I saw it and everybody else saw it. It was a bad challenge, but because the referee has dealt with it, nothing gets done."
"Now I'm a believer in right and wrong, and I thought they were both wrong.
"I can show you plenty of examples where players at top clubs have done things wrong, yet got away with it, with the ref only giving them a yellow card when it should have been red.
"The FA say they can't referee a game retrospectively, but if you are wrong and the evidence is there then you take action."
