Police say four suspected terrorists have been killed and nine arrested. Latest reports say the siege at one of the hotels has now ended.
The situation is still volatile in two of the most high-profile targets of Wednesday's attacks - the Taj Mahal Palace and Oberoi Trident hotels, where armed men are believed to be holding about 40 hostages. Police chief AN Roy is quoted by Reuters news agency as saying hostages at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel have now been rescued, although there are still an unknown number of guests in the rooms.
There are reports of intermittent exchanges of fire between security forces and the assailants barricaded inside both hotels. Latest reports say at least one large explosion has been heard at the Oberoi. Witnesses outside the Taj Mahal said civilians could be seen running from the hotel, some with suitcases. Ambulances were also reported to be arriving.
However, the hostage situation is believed to be continuing at the Oberoi Trident, where at least one large explosion was heard earlier by witnesses.
