A British woman charged by Greek police investigating the snatching of a baby from a 16-year-old girl in Athens has been named by the Foreign Office. Maria Golby, 41, from Warwickshire, has been in custody since she was moved to Athens from the island of Kefalonia where she was arrested on Friday. The teenage mother whose baby was snatched claimed she wanted to sell the child in the Greek capital. Miss Golby, from Leamington Spa, is due in court on Tuesday. 'Supermarket shopping' Police in Kefalonia detained her after the baby girl was taken to a clinic. Nurses raised the alarm after a woman told nurses she did not have anything with which to feed the seven-month-old girl. The mother of the child was expecting to receive 14,000 euros (£9,381) but she alleged the baby was taken from her. The teenager told police the child was snatched as a price was being discussed in Athens. The pair were shopping in a supermarket for food when it is claimed Miss Golby snatched the baby. The Warwickshire woman appeared before a public prosecutor in Athens at the weekend. She will now go before an investigating magistrate charged with kidnapping a baby, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said. A spokesman added that officials from the British Embassy in Athens had visited her. |
