They may sample a Newcastle Brown ale scone, or a mince and onion flavour, or a chilli, or a ginger and pineapple - or even a Turkish Delight. These are just a few of the 67 different flavoured scones on the menu. Nibbles café at Newbiggin now plans to go into the mail order business after visitors from abroad e-mailed demanding supplies of the unique delicacies. And owners Colin and Jacqui Nevin are contacting the Guinness Book of Records to register their culinary achievement. Exotic scones Jacqui, a 54-year-old grandmother of seven, said she became bored with baking traditional fruit or cheese scones and decided to experiment with more unusual ingredients. Now she bakes six or seven batches - about 150 a day - selling them at 90p per scone. "I will try a new flavour and put a few up for sale," she said. "If they do well I will bake a batch and freeze them." The couple have only been in their present cafe for two years but Colin said many people come in especially to try the exotic scones. "We are becoming known all over the country and getting requests from around the world," he said. The couple are not sure what category the Guinness records book could put them in - but a Guinness-flavoured scone will surely follow. |
