A short time later, a boy and girl, aged 14 and seven, were approached on a nearby street by a woman in a car who offered them a lift. The girl suffered minor bruising but was otherwise unharmed.
She drove away after they refused to get in the car, said police. The woman who grabbed the child in St Adrian's Close is described by police as white, tall with a slim build and grey hair.
Thames Valley Police is linking the incidents, which took place on St Adrian's Close and Wessex Way in the Berkshire town. Officers are no longer investigating a second reported incident after it was revealed the woman involved was known to the family.
The woman involved is described as white, aged in her forties, tall with a slim build and grey hair. She reportedly spoke with a British accent. This incident involved a boy and girl, aged 14 and seven.
In the second incident, she was driving a dark silver or grey Vauxhall Zafira, police said. Det Insp Gav Stiles said: "We have identified and spoken to the woman involved in the second reported incident and we are satisfied that there was no offence and it was a case of mistaken identity.
"The woman contacted police herself and we are no longer investigating this occurrence."
