Security alert sees roads closed Police attacked at scene of alert

Motorists are being asked to avoid parts of Lurgan, County Armagh, due to a security alert. Police have come under attack by a crowd throwing petrol bombs, stones, fireworks and other missiles in Lurgan.
The Cornakinnegar Road, North Circular Road and the surrounding area are affected. Police were attending the scene of a security alert at at Cornakinnegar Road in the town. A police vehicle was badly damaged, but there were no injuries.
Police are investigating reports of a suspicious object having been left. The Army are at the scene and a number of roads have been closed. The alert was declared a hoax after a number of controlled explosions were carried out on a suspect object.
There are reports of emergency services being attacked with stones at the scene. Meanwhile, the Army are examining a suspect object in the Ardenlee estate, Downpatrick.
The incident began shortly after 1450 GMT and a road is closed at the entrance to the estate.
Commenting on the attack on officers in Lurgan, Chief Inspector Jason Murphy said: "It is deeply disturbing that in carrying out an operation to safeguard the local community, police themselves came under attack when petrol bombs and other items were thrown at them.
"It is fortunate that no one was injured.
"Police in Lurgan are doing their utmost to prevent and tackle crime and ensure the safety of all."
