Prosecutor Iskandar Ahmad told the court Monday he received instruction from the attorney general to offer a lower “alternative charge” to Doan, which Huong’s lawyer Salim Bashir confirmed was for causing hurt by a dangerous weapon, which carries a maximum of 10 years in jail if convicted. The surprising move came just weeks after the Malaysian authorities refused a request from the Vietnamese government to release Doan. She is asking for leniency and Bashir said it was “very likely she could walk out free today”. The prosecutor Iskandar Ahmad told the court on Monday that he had received instructions from the attorney general to offer a lower “alternative charge” to Doan.
Doan’s lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik told the court that her plea showed Doan “has taken responsibility” for her actions. He also told the court that her move also saved judicial time. Doan’s lawyer Salim Bashir confirmed the charge was for causing hurt by a dangerous weapon, which carries a maximum of 10 years in jail if convicted.
Her lawyer said she would probably receive a lighter sentence, saying: it is “very likely she could walk out free today”.
Doan is asking for leniency. In support of this request, her lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik told the court that her plea showed Doan “has taken responsibility” for her actions and that the plea also saved judicial time.
The plea brings to an end the trials following a crime the prosecutor likened to something from a James Bond film.
