The man accused of kidnapping Shannon Matthews suffered a fractured jaw when he was attacked in prison. Shannon Matthews was frightened and crying when police found her hidden under a bed, a court has heard,
Michael Donovan's injuries were described to the jury as his trial resumed at Leeds Crown Court. Det Con Paul Kettlewell said officers were searching Michael Donovan's flat in Batley Carr, West Yorkshire, when they heard a child's voice.
The trial was halted on Monday when it emerged Mr Donovan needed medical care after he was punched in prison. He told Leeds Crown Court the voice said: "Stop it, you're frightening me."

TV appeals Fractured jaw
Mr Kettlewell continued: "Then I went into the bedroom. My colleague turned towards me and, as I was beginning to think perhaps the voice came from inside the bed, there was a noise inside the bed as a small girl started to emerge."
He described how other officers passed the nine-year-old to him.
He told the court: "She was frightened and she was crying."

Earlier the jury heard from Mr Donovan's next-door neighbour, who said she had seen Ms Matthews outside the flat two days after her daughter disappeared.
Carol Battye later identified Ms Matthews as the person she had seen during an identity parade on 7 April.
But under cross-examination in court she said she could not be certain the woman was Ms Matthews.
The jury also heard that Mr Donovan had suffered a fractured jaw when he was attacked in prison on Thursday.
The trial had to be halted on Monday when it emerged that Mr Donovan needed medical care.

Earlier the jury was shown a montage of tearful TV appeals made by Ms Matthews during her daughter's 24-day disappearance.
Shannon went missing from her home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, in February, when she was nine.
The court has heard how she was found in Mr Donovan's flat .
The prosecution alleges Mr Donovan kept her drugged and imprisoned in his flat in Lidgate Gardens, Batley Carr, as part of a plan he and Ms Matthews had to claim £50,000 in reward money.
