Detectives investigating the death of teenager in Edinburgh said they are following a positive line of inquiry.

Liam Melvin, 17, was fatally injured in what police have described as a "disturbance" in Southhouse Brae in the city on Friday evening.

He was approached by youths in the street at about 1930 GMT on Friday and died soon afterwards.

Lothian and Borders Police are treating the death as murder and appealing for witnesses.

Detective Inspector Linda Little, the officer leading the inquiry, said: "This was a tragic loss of a young life. We are following positive lines of inquiry but I am anxious to trace further witnesses.

"This would have been a relatively busy time of the evening and people may have seen something which would be helpful to our inquiry.

"I would ask them to come forward to help us quickly track down the person responsible."

Police have set up a murder squad and an incident room and have been conducting house-to-house and other inquiries following the death.
