NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Tuesday a meeting of defense ministers of the alliance scheduled for the next day. “We will discuss Russia’s violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty,” he said, adding that Moscow continues “to develop and deploy several battalions of the SSC-8 missile.” The ministers “will discuss what steps NATO should take to adapt to a world with more Russian missiles,” according to Stoltenberg. “NATO does not want a new arms race,” he said, adding that the alliance doesn’t intend “to deploy new ground-based nuclear missiles in Europe.” The Russian Foreign Ministry said earlier this month that NATO has completely adjusted to the line of the US, aimed at the definitive dismantling of the global arms control system.
