Pop divas enjoy chart dominance

Girls Aloud have gone straight into the UK album chart at number one, knocking US singer Pink off the top spot.

On the singles rundown, their hit The Promise was pushed down to number three by Beyonce, whose If I Were a Boy was the highest new entry at number two.

In a chart contest billed as the "battle of the divas", Britney Spears landed at number four, while Leona Lewis was another new entry at five.

The X Factor charity song Hero stayed at number one for a second week.

It sold 189,600 copies in the past week, taking its total sold to date to 502,844 copies.

All proceeds are going to Help For Heroes, a charity for British servicemen and women wounded in Britain's current conflicts, and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Other female stars in the top 10 included Katy Perry at number seven with Hot 'n' Cold and Alesha Dixon at number eight with The Boy Does Nothing.

Alicia Keys and Jack White were at nine with their James Bond theme Another Way To Die, while Pink slipped to 10 with So What.

Dance DJ Guru Josh was the only other male artist in the top 10 with Infinity 2008 at number six.

Christina Aguilera, the other major pop diva to release a single last week, saw her song Keeps Gettin' Better enter at number 14.

On the album rundown, Out Of Control became the first of Girls Aloud's five studio albums to top the UK charts.

High new entries also went to Enrique Iglesias' Greatest Hits collection at number three, who beat Razorlight's third album Slipway Fires into fourth place.

Snow Patrol, Kings of Leon and Celine Dion followed, with Status Quo at number eight with their hits collection.

Sir Cliff Richard's 50th Anniversary Album entered at number 11, followed by another new entry, Andrea Bocelli's Incanto, at 12.
