Sir John, who was married to North Down MP Lady Sylvia Hermon, had Alzheimer's disease for several years.
His funeral service was held at Groomsport Presbyterian Church, followed by burial in Ballyvester Cemetery in Donaghadee.
Reverend Roger Purse said Sir John had faced "unrelenting violence".
"There have been many tributes paid to him commenting on his tough and uncompromising leadership style," he said.
"He undertook the most difficult policing job in Western Europe if not the democratic world with the task of maintaining law and order in the face of unrelenting violence." |
