| My father, Lindsay Logan, who has died aged 79, was an emeritus professor of Dundee University and a distinguished educationist. | Lindsay was born in Ladybank, Fife, to Jim Logan, a cobbler, and his wife, Catherine (nee Nicholson), and grew up in the town when it housed a PoW camp for German and Italian prisoners. He went to Ladybank primary school and Bell Baxter secondary school in Cupar. He then studied French and German at nearby St Andrews and took a teacher training course at Moray House in Edinburgh, where he met Rosemary Sangster.
