Re “Nurturing Empathy (Starting Young Helps),” by Jane E. Brody (Personal Health column, Science Times, Dec. 11):

Teachers and caregivers can foster empathy in young children through the use of character traits in children’s literature, a subject I discuss in my book “Shelf Esteem.” Developing questions about characters’ motivation and examining each protagonist’s actions and speech by close reading will foster empathy and help children gain confidence and coping skills.
