The quakes were registered at a depth of 10km and about 681km northeast of the island. The small Norfolk Island lies 1,412 kilometers east of the Australian mainland. It is home to about 1750 people.
The tremors come a day after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of the French territory of New Caledonia.

There is no immediate tsunami warning and no reports of casualties.
