Officials in Badghis province say fighting between troops and insurgents went on for hours.
"Nato troops called in air support which bombed compounds in the area, killing seven civilians and 15 Taleban," Ghowrmach district governor Abdullah Waqif told AFP news agency.
The provincial police chief gave the same number of dead and said women and children had also been killed and wounded.
Troops from the US-led coalition, the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) and Afghan security forces were responding to "an insurgent ambush", a US military statement said.
"The coalition, Isaf and Afghan authorities are investigating reports of non-combatant casualties in Ghowrmach district last night."
