Officers from West Merica Police have been searching for a baby since Tuesday in connection with an alleged concealment case. Officers received a tip-off on Tuesday about an alleged offence relating to a baby that had been hidden somewhere in the county.
Police divers from South Wales recovered the body from The River Tern at The Linney in Ludlow. They arrested a teenager in connection with the alleged concealment on Tuesday and said there were no other suspects.
A woman received medical treatment and a man in his late teens was arrested and bailed in connection with the case. The body was later found by police divers from South Wales in The River Teme at The Linney in Ludlow earlier.
Underwater search A West Mercia Police spokeswoman said: "Our over-riding concern is for the family at this time and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident."
A police spokesman said: "Search teams found the body of what is believed to be a newborn baby in the River Teme at The Linney late this morning." A post mortem examination is expected on Thursday at the earliest, police said.
He added: "At this stage, detectives are treating the incident as an alleged concealment of a birth." The offence of concealment as defined by the Home Office is the hiding of an infant that has died before, at, or after birth, police said.
The Coroner for South Shropshire, Mr Anthony Sibcy, has been made aware of the find and a post mortem examination is expected in due course.
Police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the alleged incident at this time.
