Det Sup Geoff Wessell said: "Inquiries are at an early stage at the moment, but we are appealing to anyone with information to contact us." Mr Donlan, from Partington, was taken to Trafford General Hospital where he later died. Police appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Advertisement Ch Supt Janette McCormick, head of Greater Manchester Police's Trafford division, said: "This tragic incident has left Donald's family and the wider community devastated.

"We have now put high visibility patrols in place, including community contact points and we have set up confidential telephone lines.
"We have been working throughout the day with community leaders to ensure that people in the area still feel safe, and this will continue.
Anyone with any information on Donald's murder is asked to call police or Crimestoppers.
