A blast has occurred at the headquarters of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) in the northern city of Arkhangelsk. The incident happened on Wednesday morning, killing one person who was standing right next to the local HQ. The victim was not an employee of the agency, according to TASS. Russia’s national anti-terrorism committee has confirmed the incident, but said the motive behind it is not yet known.
It is understood the explosion occurred between the first and second doors of the building’s entrance. Pictures purportedly showing the aftermath of the blast have started to circulate on social media. Local Governor Igor Orlov told reporters that an unknown device went off and its type is being determined. He also elaborated on the number of casualties.
“Three are in hospital. There is one dead, the person is being identified,” Orlov said. The FSB later confirmed that the victim was not one of their employees.
