Heavy snow warning for drivers Roads Service defends snow action

Drivers are being warned of difficult driving conditions in the north west because of heavy snow. The Roads Service has defended its response to the heavy snow which caused treacherous conditions on the Glenshane Pass on Tuesday morning.
The Glenshane Pass is described as treacherous and there has been an accident in Feeney, which has been blamed on the adverse conditions The road was blocked for a time, and there was an accident in nearby Feeny.
Paul Leonard, from Londonderry, who is stranded on the Glenshane Pass told BBC News drivers should avoid the area. Section engineer with the Roads Service, Austin Montgomery, said they "were fully prepared for bad weather".
"The conditions are very, very slippery. There's packed ice under fallen snow," he said. "The weather changed rapidly from rain to sleet to snow then back to rain, and under those circumstances any salting can be diluted by rainfall."
"And there's a lot of HGV lorries slipping and sliding." "That allows snow to build up," he said.
