http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/uk/5355156.stm Version 0 of 1. The Pope makes a double front-page appearance for what the Daily Mirror points out is the first papal apology in 2,000 years. The paper says tact is as important as truth when you are the leader of one of the world's great religions. But the Daily Express says Western self-abasement in the face of blackmail has gone on for too long. A letter in the Daily Telegraph urges people to forget this discussion and instead focus on a solution to the Darfur crisis. Tough time The Liberal Democrats get a rough ride over their taxation proposals. The Daily Mail warns of a tax bombshell on homes and cars costing families £4,500. The Sun goes further by declaring: "It's a good job the loopy Lib Dems will never be in Downing Street." More bad news as a poll in the Times suggests Sir Menzies Campbell's popularity ratings are lower than his predecessor's and are falling. But there is some cheer for the party, with the Independent's latest poll of polls pointing to a hung parliament. Care system 'poor' The Daily Mail says a damning report has exposed the shameful state of Britain's care system. The study, which the paper is serialising, highlights a number of grim statistics, such as that a quarter of girls are pregnant by the time they leave care. The Mail describes the findings as a Dickensian picture of official indifference, squalor and violence. The Guardian reports on a Scotland Yard study that reveals black people are more likely than white to face criminal charges when caught with cannabis. White carrots There's amusement, sympathy and irritation that six detectives investigated a report Mrs Blair aimed a playful slap at a teenager in Glasgow. 'Serve her right' is the Telegraph's verdict for helping foster "nosy paranoia" in her role as a "trendy human rights lawyer." The Daily Mail says that shopper will be rubbing their eyes with disbelief at the appearance of white carrots on supermarket shelves. The white variety are said to be sweeter and juicier than the orange ones. |
