A teenager was caught speeding at 125mph less than two weeks after he passed his driving test, police have revealed.

Grampian Police said the 17-year-old was detected on a 60mph road near Ellon during a clampdown across the region.

A 21-year-old male driver was also detected travelling at 90mph on a 40mph road, and then at nearly 120mph on a 70mph stretch.

Chf Insp Tom Forrester described the speeds as "madness".

'Very dangerous'

The motorists in question were charged with dangerous driving.

Chf Insp Forrester, head of roads policing for Grampian Police, said: "Travelling at these speeds on our public roads in good weather conditions is very, very dangerous.

"To do it during the extremely poor weather we experienced over the weekend is simply madness.

"These young drivers showed complete disregard for their own safety and the safety of others on the road."
