City's referendum result expected City's mayor to go following vote

The result of a referendum over the future of the political system in Stoke-on-Trent is expected later. Voters in Stoke-on-Trent have voted to get rid of their elected mayor.
More than 186,000 voters were asked if they want an elected council leader or an elected mayor, both with a cabinet, to run the city. The current political system, the only one in the country, will be replaced by a council leader and cabinet system.
The referendum vote was 21,231 for a council leader and cabinet and 14,592 for a mayor and cabinet. The turnout was 19.23%.

The result of the referendum is expected around lunchtime. Councillors already said they prefer having the option of an elected council leader with a cabinet.
Two groups were set up last month to campaign for the different options.
