A 38-year-old man who is believed to be from Essex has drowned on his honeymoon in Spain.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed that consular services had been offered to the family of Russell Kenneth Hawkes.

Officials said Mr Hawkes died on Monday afternoon in Fuengirola after he got into difficulties in the sea and failed to respond to resuscitation.

His family were with him on the beach and raised the alarm.

Mr Hawkes is believed to have been married in Luton in August and was combining the honeymoon with a family holiday.

A Thomas Cook spokesperson said: "We can confirm that a guest travelling on a Thomas Cook holiday has tragically died.

"We would like to express our deepest sympathy and our thoughts are with the family.

"Thomas Cook's team in the Costa del Sol are working closely to support the family at this difficult time."
