One person is thought to have been killed in a light aircraft crash off the North Yorkshire coast.
The alarm was raised at 1620 BST after a two-seater plane was seen plummeting into the sea near cliffs close to Robin Hood's Bay.
A major search was under way but it was scaled down after an object, thought to be the stricken aircraft, was found submerged in the water.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said there were no signs of a survivor.
The aircraft involved is believed to be a Piper 38, which left the Teesside area earlier on Friday.
Mayday message | |
A spokeswoman said: "The [rescue] aircraft have left the scene as they have completed their search.
"The lifeboat teams believe they have located the aircraft below the surface of the water. There were no signs of a survivor.
"They will be having another search from around midnight at low-tide. They need to identify if that is the aircraft involved but they think that it is."
Humber Coastguard said one person had been on board the plane, which transmitted a Mayday message.
Watch manager Mike Puplett said debris including carpet and a shoe was found about an hour after the plane crashed.
Mr Puplett told BBC News: "We took several 999 calls from members of the public at about 1620 BST this afternoon. | Mr Puplett told BBC News: "We took several 999 calls from members of the public at about 1620 BST this afternoon. |
