Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, the Royal Irish Regiment, are to receive operational medals for their service in Afghanistan.

The battalion spent the last six months in Helmand Province on 'Op Herrick' which entailed, working with and mentoring the Afghan National Army.

Medals marking the tour of duty will be presented to the 400 soldiers at Clive Barracks in Shropshire.

The 1st Battalion returned from Afghanistan last week.

The soldiers, who are based at Tern Hill barracks, Shropshire, were reunited with their families last Thursday.
