About 500 rail passengers were trapped in a tunnel in south London after their train split in two. About 500 rail passengers were trapped in a tunnel in south London for 90 minutes when their train split in two.
The 1745 BST Victoria to Rochester train left the platform at Sydenham Hill station at 1830 BST when the connection between carriages broke. The first five carriages of the 1745 BST Victoria to Rochester train went into Penge tunnel while the final five were left at Sydenham Hill station.
All passengers were taken off the train at about 1944 BST before the line was reopened. None are thought to have been injured. Passengers were trapped in the tunnel until engineers reversed the carriages back into the station.
Southeastern Trains said it would launch an investigation into the cause. No-one was hurt in the incident which rail operator Southeastern said it would be investigating.
When the carriages separated, half the train pulled into the nearby tunnel while the other half remained at the station. "Passengers on the second half (of the train) still in the station were let off straight away," a Southeastern spokeswoman said.
