Detectives are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at about 2030 BST. According to detectives, two white men entered a shop on Park Road shortly before 2030 BST, were racially abusive towards the shopkeeper and made threats of violence towards him.
Ten minutes later as the shop was being closed up, a 24-year-old man known to the shopkeeper was attacked by two men.
An investigation has been opened and Merseyside police are examining CCTV tapes as well as conducting house-to-house inquiries in the area.
