Birmingham's Bullring shopping centre has been voted Britain's ugliest building, in a new survey.

More than a third of 1,111 people surveyed thought Birmingham had the ugliest buildings in the country.

Manchester's Arndale Centre, the Angel of the North and the Scottish Parliament were all also criticised.

A third of people questioned wanted such buildings replaced with a major cultural building while 17% wanted a landmark statue instead.

Birmingham's central library came second in the survey of buildings thought to be the ugliest, by computer games maker EA.

People also said they wanted to see the Liver Building in Liverpool, Spaghetti Junction near Birmingham and Drakes Circus in Plymouth, demolished.

In contrast, the Eiffel tower in Paris was voted the most beautiful building in Europe, receiving 15% of the total vote.

It was followed by the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, then the Louvre and Palace of Versailles in Paris.
